Perfume, Cologne – What’s the Difference?

“Perfume counters” are stocked with a wide selection of perfumes intended to accentuate the human scent. Many of these counters are found in pharmacies, fine department stores or online outlets. The expression “perfume counter” is a loose term to define these products since many of these so-called perfumes are really just cheap imitations of the true perfume. Many of these variations are not nearly as pure as the look-alike discount brand version of the designer scent, with a label that resembles the true name brand.

What, after all, is a perfume? Essential oils that are extracted from various plants form the base for a perfume. Remember the famous gold, frankincense and myrrh that the Three Wise Men carried to the baby Jesus? Frankincense was a fragrant resin of a tree that grew in East Africa that ancient people would burn for its scent like we burn candles for aromatherapy. Myrrh was also a gum resin that was obtained from the bark of a different tree from East Africa. One of the uses of myrrh in ancient days was to make perfume and an early form of toothpaste.

Since a true perfume consists of a secret recipe of essential oils and various ingredients that permit the liquid to be poured into an atomizer or other types of containers, a parfum or pure perfume will have the highest concentration of oils. Due to this greater amount of scented essential oils, the perfume’s scent will be longer lasting and stronger. A little bit of parfum is all it takes to maintain its alluring aroma for hours. The high price of true perfume is the result of the high concentration of oils.

To make up for the high cost, many perfume makers water down their signature parfum versions and sell at a much lower price to a broader market of customers. However, the watered-down cheaper brands aren’t nearly as long lasting as the true version.

There are several standard categories of perfume derivatives that are generally sold. The product closest to a perfume is called Eau de Parfum. “Eau” is the French word for water so this product is simply a true perfume mixed with extra water. Now a perfume company executive would cringe at this crude explanation but basically this is the translation of the name from the French. The next product down the list is an Eau de Toilette followed by an Eau de Cologne, known simply as “cologne”. If the brand name of perfume is sold in all these categories, the perfume is the most expensive and the cologne should be the least expensive.

Since everyone’s body chemistry is different, fragrances smell differently on different people. Scents don’t have the same aroma since people’s skin types are different. For example, dry skin doesn’t hold scents as long. However, natural body oil will hold a fragrance longer since the perfume can blend with it easier. Before purchasing a perfume, it is always best to test it to determine how it blends with your body chemistry for a desired fragrance.

Cheap Perfumes – Style and Substance on a Budget

The idea of a cut price perfume is appealing – after all who doesn’t want to save a little bit of money. But it’s important to know your scents to find cheap perfumes that are authentic.

Since the end of the Second World War, perfume manufacturing has seen its biggest advances ever, with the advent of the chemical industry.

Pre-war perfume was created using real ingredients, and so unsurprisingly the cost of this perfume was high. Today, just one litre of rose absolute essential oil costs in the region of £4000, so it’s not difficult to see where your money is going.

Synthetic scents were discovered in the 1870s but it was only after the Second World War that their use became popular, helping to drive down the cost of your favourite fragrance.

Thanks to the magic of science, perfumes could be created chemically to smell like the real thing. Additional ingredients meant the fragrance lasted longer, while technology made it possible to create perfumes in large quantities.

Cheap perfumes are now available widely, but before you start to pick your scent, it’s worth considering a few pointers. First of all, not all fragrances are created equal. Few people are aware of the differences between eau de toilette and parfum, but this is one of the biggest factors in the differing price points.

Making up the liquid base of scents is alcohol, and it is the ratio of alcohol to the concentrated scent used that determines how your fragrance is labelled, and also how much it will cost you.

Eau de toilette is typically around one to six per cent perfume concentrates – the remainder of the scent will be made up of alcohol.

This means the fragrance is often lighter and tends to wear off quicker than more concentrated varieties. It may cost less than perfume, but the chances are you’ll apply more of it more often, so it may not be as cheap as you think.

Parfum (also known as perfume) is the gold standard of scents. It tends to be somewhere between 15-40 per cent pure perfume, so the scent is stronger. As it is the pure perfume that you’re paying for, you can expect a bottle of parfum to set you back the most. But, the scent will last longer and you’ll use less.

Falling somewhere between eau de toilette and parfum is eau de parfum, with around 7-15 per cent perfume concentrates. This is the most common scent purchased, as it’s both reasonably priced and is suitably long lasting.

Don’t forget, if you can’t quite stretch to one of the above, you can also find a huge variety of lotions, creams, body sprays and soaps which also contain fragrance and can provide a delicate scent for less.

The internet is often the cheapest place to find cheap perfumes – companies can buy scents in bulk, and avoid the costs of displays, optional gift wrapping and sales staff to spritz you as you walk on by. If you know the fragrance you’re after, then do your research online to find the best place to buy.

Don’t forget to check the type of perfume (for example eau de toilette), as this will affect the cost, as will the size of the bottle, so make sure you compare like for like.

Searching online can be a great way to find clear skin, but make sure you know what you’re purchasing before you hit the buy button. A little research before you make your choice will go a long way to keeping the cost of your scent down.

Woman’s Need to Feel Beautiful

Every woman feels the need to take care of herself. And so should she. By taking care of herself, she makes sure that she keeps herself physically fit, eats healthy food, keeps herself productive with her work, takes care of her family, and makes sure that she looks prim and proper all over. However, there is one thing that a woman should not miss, and that is making sure to put on the right scent.

It is important that women’s fragrance should not be left out when completing a woman’s beauty regimen. Having even a body spray with her is a must. A woman should have all kinds of sets with her to compliment her daily needs, and so that she will feel beautiful day in and day out.

For special occasions, she can use the Parfum Extracts or Eau de Parfum that has greater concentrations of 40% and 20% aromatic compounds respectively. For regular days, that is simply for daily use, a woman can put on Eau de Toilette or Cologne with scents that she personally can pick out to match her mood. These sets of women’s fragrance are what a woman needs to perk her up and make her feel good all over for the rest of the day.

Apart from scented liquids, an added bonus would be soothing essential oils that keep the woman’s skin moisturized and smelling good. There are sets of these essential oils that are now also available for women to choose from.

The sets of women’s fragrance and sets of fragrance body lotions vary. For instance, a woman can buy in any fragrance store or buy online perfumes from trusted websites. She can have very good choices that range from designer fragrances such as Armani perfume, Dolce and Gabbana Perfume, Eternity perfume, Cool Water Perfume and even Sarah Jessica Parker’s perfume. All these great finds in any fragrance store outside or in the web.

If you buy from retail fragrance stores, make sure that you know the retailer company selling them, so that you won’t end up getting the fake ones. But not to worry because if you Eau de Parfums at credible fragrance stores, they really do sell authentic perfumes, the ones that are mixed with real essential oils and other chemicals and aromatic compounds. And no matter how modernly manufactured these perfumes are, be they be in any form – Eau de Parfum, Eau de Toilette, Eae de Cologne, body sprays or Eau Extract, you can be sure that they are still being made from the best essential oils, aromatic compounds and chemicals to a woman’s satisfaction.

Women’s fragrance is something that women should never leave out in the priority list.

A Perfumista’s Guide to Shopping for Perfume for Mother’s Day

A visit to the perfume counter of the local department store can be a frightening experience for the inexperienced fragrance shopper. If you’re new to buying perfume, you are probably going to be horrified to discover that there are literally hundreds of different fragrances that will compete for your attention. What’s more, they sometimes have very similar names. Don’t try to buy a perfume named Beautiful unless you know a little more. Do you mean Beautiful? Or Beautiful Love? Or perhaps Beautiful Sheer? They’re different, you know.

However, you can navigate the perfume counter and wind up with a great gift that will delight your mom.

First, you need to get over certain preconceived notions you have going in. You’re not going to get a bargain. Perfume is one of those luxury items, like Manolo Blahnik shoes and Rolex watches, that just does not go on sale. With some luck, they’ll be offering some gift sets, packaged deals, or products that come in fancy tote bags or with accessories.

Perfume is as complex as fine wine and about as difficult to make. At times, perfume experts may speak to you about things you don’t understand. That’s why you need this guide.

If you know your mother’s favorite fragrances or if she has specifically hinted about wanting a certain product, you’re halfway home. But you may be asked if you want perfume (sometimes pronounced the French way, parfum or par-fam) or an eau-de-parfum (always pronounced in French) or a cologne. Those are three different products and you’ll notice they differ in size, possibly packaging, and price. Perfume is by far the most expensive and it contains the most scent. Pure fragrance is too harsh on the skin and disagreeable on the nose to wear, so it is blended with other fragrances and then put in a vehicle to help stabilize it. Fragrance products consist of scent mixed with a liquid (no fragrance product is pure 100% scent). In terms of how much scent the product contains, perfume contains the most, eau-de-parfum ranks next, and cologne contains the least.

However, there is no official percentage of scent set forth that defines perfume; it tends to be a range. Here’s your first insider’s tip. Estee Lauder fragrances are known as being strong stuff, that is, having more scent than most other similar products. Thus, an Estee Lauder eau-de-parfum may be close to what another manufacturer labels as perfume.

Is strong better? A woman uses less perfume and eau-de-parfum with each application and the scent lasts longer. If your mom likes to re-apply fragrance frequently during the day or if her activities are such that she frequently works out or showers during the day, a lighter spray-on fragrance is best. When in doubt, select an eau-de-parfum.

If you don’t know what your mom likes or would like, these are some older, established scents that have achieved near-classic status. The fragrance world, like fashion, is prone to fads but every now and then something stands the test of time. These are fragrances that have been around a while but are still very popular. They’re good choices for Mother’s Day because most people like them (so the laws of probability hold that your mom will, too):

• Tresor by Lancome, floral, sparkling, sophisticated

• Eternity by Calvin Klein, floral, youthful

• Obsession by Calvin Klein, floral, feminine

• Happy by Clinique, light, floral, fun

Those are fragrances that most people would like. But maybe your mom (or grandmother) remembers certain perfumes from “way back.” Perfumes often get discontinued so it can be hard to find a nostalgic scent. Some oldies but goodies on the market that are highly recommended:

• Chanel No. 5 by Chanel, a “sparkling” floral fragrance that has been around since the 1920s

• Youth Dew by Estee Lauder, a spicy Oriental fragrance that dates back to the 1950s; there’s also a “re-make” of it called Youth Dew Amber Nude

• Miss Dior by Christian Dior from the 1970s, another spicy fragrance

• Y by Yves St. Laurent, also from the 1970s, a sparkling fragrance

But maybe your mom would like to try something new. If she’s fashion-forward, sporty, or just likes the latest stuff, here are some relatively new things to hit the perfume counter:

• Sunset Heat by Escada, a youthful very tropical scent

• Beyond Paradise by Estee Lauder, a rich floral with strong honeysuckle notes

• Very Irresistible by Givenchy, like a great big bouquet of roses, I never met anyone who did not like this scent

• V by Valentino, light, clean but still sophisticated

• One by Calvin Klein, a fresh scent that could worn by men or women

If you prefer to shop online, you should be careful about perfume warehouse websites that are actually selling knockoffs or counterfeit fragrances. If the prices are very low or the website looks shady, stay away. This is your mother, for pity’s sake. Don’t buy her sham products. There are lots of good websites and one I recommend is [http://www.sephora.com]. You won’t find everything here but you will usually be able to find more than you can get at the perfume counter of your local department store. If you think your mom might enjoy something more obscure and unusual, look for these:

• Stella by Stella McCartney, very trendy packaging, nice fragrance, and, yes, that’s Paul McCartney’s daughter

• Green Tea by Bvlgari, an unusual but light fragrance which reminds me of a luxury spa

• Goddess by Baby Phat, a pretty pink floral in a girly container

• Lovely by Sarah Jessica Parker, a “celebrity” fragrance that’s actually quite charming

• Lemon Sugar by Fresh, which is what they call a “fruity floral.” it’s definitely going to remind you of food, but it’s a very fun summery scent

If you’re an Internet denizen and don’t mind going to a niche perfumery website, the best one from my perfumista’s little black book is this: http://www.bondno9.com. The company, Bond No. 9, is a New York perfume house that names its fragrances after New York neighborhoods. If your mom is a fragrance maniac, get her one of the multi-scent gift packages that Bond No. 9 offers. But if you’re looking for one scent, I don’t think you can pick a dud in the entire Bond No. 9 line-up. This stuff is exquisite. Nevertheless, let me share a couple of my personal Bond No. 9 favorites (and I have not tried them all yet).

• Chinatown, one of the most unique fragrances I’ve ever used; it has some light citrus top notes and a soft patchouli base.

• Gramercy Park, both light and sophisticated, a sort of summery fragrance that has some oomph to it

• Chelsea Flowers, a very robust floral

• Little Italy, possibly the very finest citrus scent available anywhere

One good thing about buying perfume: most places will provide gift wrapping and since perfume is generally nicely packaged anyway, the gift will look gorgeous.

If you can’t make up your mind, buy several. If the bank allows, buy your mother a few different scents. Very few women are truly devoted to one scent exclusively. Most of us like some variety in our fragrance life. If you do buy a few different fragrances, try to mix up fragrance types. For instance, if you pick out one floral (such as Calvin Klein’s Eternity) then go for a spicy or fruity scent as your next choice.

One last note before you venture into fragrance shopping. Perfumes all have names (Eternity, Chinatown, Pure White Linen) but it is common to name the manufacturer right after the name (Eternity by Calvin Klein). When you get to the perfume counter, you’ll find perfumes grouped by manufacturer. Also, if you shop online, many large fragrance sites also group scents by manufacturers, although you can usually search by name.

Get the Most Out of Your Perfume

The word perfume is one of the broadest categories. Perfume refers to body scents and particular types of perfume. Scented creams, lotions and body washes do not come under the perfume category.

The word perfume specifically refers to the most strongest and long lasting scents of all the other terms, and are what are known as "layered" scents meaning they contain a combination of different scents. "Layered" scents are often called "notes" which is a word you have probably seen often when browsing websites online or shopping in department stores. "Notes" are not picked at random.

Perfume typically contains 3 notes. The first notes are of the strongest scents. They also last for the shortest time. These are the notes that you smell when you first apply a fragrance and the strength will last for 3-4 minutes, eventually wearing off within a couple of hours. After this you will smell the next layer.

The second layer is called a middle note and is a less volatile note. Middle notes will last until the middle of the day or the beginning of afternoon. You can smell the last layer of a perfume in the evening. It is a long lasting and the most subtle scent and will decrease as time goes on. This layering means that perfumes will change their scent throughout the day. Parfumiers in the industry will combine scents so that layers will compliment and smell good together as they slowly change, and are subtle and pleasing.

Colognes

I used to think that colognes meant that it was a man's perfume. But not true! It is a perfume, but a perfume that only has one scent. This means that Colognes are not as long lasting but they are stronger than perfumes. The reasons for this apparent paradox are related

Because Colognes only have a single scent they will dissipate a lot faster than perfumes and that is why they are of a stronger scent so that they can last as long as possible. Colognes therefore are less subtle. It is very easy for a man to wear too much cologne and end up "over doing it".

Back to my cologne misconception, though Cologne is not just for men, there is a lot of Cologne for women on the market today. But most men's fragrances are called Colognes. Perhaps the word perfume sounds too feminine for men. So they are generally advertised under Cologne

Eau de parfum and Eau de toilette

The last two liquid scents are Eau de toilette and Eau de parfum. 'Eau' means that what you are buying is perfumed water or make up water. The word 'Eau' is a French word and means water. Toilette is a French word also and means getting oneself dressed and prepared. Eau de Parfum is the most popular scent out of the two.

Eau de parfum is cheaper than perfume and not as strong as cologne it is based on single scents. Women like to wear parfum on dates as it lasts through a date, though parfum tends not to last the full day. It is a scent that women like to dab on their necks and wrists using the glass jar stopper.

Another similar scent to eau de parfum is eau de toilette. Toilette is the weakest form of perfume and is also the cheapest. This scent lasts a couple of hours but the good side to eau de toilette is they are cheap and come in small bottles which is handy for a woman to carry in her bag and spray throughout the course of the day.

Creams and Lotions

When you find a perfume you like, sometimes that particular brand also has scented lotions, these creams and lotions are not perfumes. They have the same concentration as eau de toilette and they also contain oils. A person would be able to smell them on you, but they are subtle and will only last a couple of hours. If you have thought about buying a body scent, it would be more cost effective to get a parfum or toilette spray, than scented lotions and creams. Lotions and creams are not designed for the treatment of skin in any way, and not as perfumes.

Ralph Lauren – The Essence of an American Icon

Do you need true American style? Then you need to get to know Ralph Lauren. His designs are synonymous with all that is truly and uniquely American. His business began meagerly as a line of neckties almost 50 years ago. Since then, the business of Ralph Lauren has skyrocketed into the stratosphere. Along with the signature neckties, the House of Ralph Lauren has created some of the most memorable fashion, furniture and fragrances. It has blossomed into a multi-million dollar empire. Throughout this growth spurt, Ralph Lauren has stayed true to his roots: the preppy-chic image. In the late 1970s his signature scents – Polo for Men and the accompanying Lauren for Women. Since then he has added several more memorable fragrances: from the manly Chaps and Romance Silver, Polo Sport and Glamorous, Pure Turquoise and Summer Romance for Women.

The launch of the flagship scents in the late 1970s was quite the divestiture for Ralph Lauren. It is a venture that has paid off for the design house in great fashion. Even though there are a myriad of scents out there Polo and Lauren still remain the most notable.

Polo for Men is the classic masculine fragrance. This was, as previously noted, Ralph first men’s cologne. It has a very distinct note of pine. Keeping with that theme, the bottle and packaging are a forest green color. The top notes in this mannish fragrance are pine, lavender, juniper, Artemisia, bergamot, cumin, basil and green notes. Middle notes included are coriander, marjoram, jasmine, carnation, geranium, thyme and rose. Base notes are comprised of oak moss, patchouli, leather, cedar, amber, musk and Frankincense. Polo won the Fifi Award (the Oscars for the perfume world) in 1979.

The equally historic Lauren for Women is the exact polar opposite of its masculine counterpart. It is all girl. It is a strong, flowery fragrance. This womanly perfume contains notes of blended green florals, violet, carnation, rose and rare spices.

To call the line of Ralph Lauren simple is a misnomer. It is a classically-designed, authentic American design house that pays attention to the most minute of details. All the products, especially the fine fragrances, have kept up with this tradition that Ralph Lauren started years ago.

The Benefit of Wearing Fragrances at Your Pulse Points

What lady (or gentleman) doesn’t love wearing the perfect fragrance? Since you never know what a new perfume will smell like, you should always ask for a sample. Don’t just sniff it and decide, give the perfume time to mix with your natural body oils. This gives you time to see how the scent blends with your own body. Scents aren’t going to smell the same on all people. Once you have chosen the best scent for your personality, you can decide the best way to wear it

Pulse points are the recommended way to enhance your perfume. Wearing your perfume at the pulse points is recommended for a variety of reasons. For one, the warmth that emanates from your body at the pulse points helps diffuse the smell of the fragrance into the air. In addition, since heat rises, the scent will waft upwards so that you get whiffs of it throughout the day. Wearing perfume this way also enhances the effects of the perfume blending with your natural body oils to create a scent that belongs only to you.

You may not know where your pulse points are. Thee spots include the inner part of your wrists, below your jaw, by the ears, and behind your knees. As your pulse beats, heat is concentrated in those areas and it helps distribute the aroma into the air. These spots are not the only spots at which you should dab some perfume. You may dab it anywhere, including your hair and even arm pits. Be careful doing that though as sensitive skin can break out.

Many people rub their wrists when they dab perfume on. This is a perfume no-no. Unlike many people think, doing this does not enhance the scent. It actually detracts from the mixing ability of the perfume. It disallows the perfume to combine with your natural body oils. If you dab your scent on the right areas and follow the rules of perfume wear, you should be fine.

Another perfume wear tip is to spray the perfume in front of yourself and walk through the mist. This certainly spreads the scent over your entire body. In addition, it adds to the aroma you have already added when your dabbed it on your pulse points. Following these tips will allow the perfume to emanate from your body creating an atmosphere of all-over aroma.

Getting the perfume to emanate is also accomplished by using multiple scented products. This is known as layering. If you buy the lotion, body wash, deodorant, and perfume, you can layer them to add that emanating effect. Many body spray scents, colognes smells, and perfume aromas come in deodorants, lotions, shower gels, and more. Use this to your advantage.

Wearing perfume and cologne comes with many rules. You need to pick a perfume that suits you. You also need to know the rules of layering. In addition, applying perfume to your pulse points is important. Following these rules can ensure that your perfume emanates from you body creating a pleasing aromatic aroma.

The Truth About Air Fresheners. 4 Additives to Avoid and 6 Great Ways to Freshen the Air Naturally

A pleasant smelling home may seem like a very inviting place to be, but many spray and plug-in fragrance products add harmful chemicals to their “fresh scent.”

At the same time you are making your home smell like a spring garden, you could be adding many chemicals into the air you breathe. Please note that the list below is just a partial list of the chemicals found in commercial air fresheners.

These unnatural substances can cause allergic reactions, trigger asthma attacks, irritate the lungs… and worse.

o Benzylacetate: found in perfume, cologne, shampoo, fabric softener, stickup air fresheners, dishwashing liquid, detergent, soap, hairspray, bleach, after shave, and deodorants. It is a carcinogenic linked to pancreatic cancer. It can be absorbed through the skin causing systemic effects.

o Benzyl Alcohol: found in perfume, cologne, soap, shampoo, nail enamel remover, air freshener, laundry bleach, detergent, Vaseline lotion, deodorants, and fabric softener. It can irritate the upper respiratory tract, cause headache, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, a drop in blood pressure, central nervous system depression, and death in severe cases due to respiratory failure.

o Phthalates: It is estimated that over 80% of air fresheners contain phthalates, which have been linked to hormone (particularly testosterone) disruption. The state of California lists several phthalates as chemicals known to cause birth defects or reproductive harm. Exposure has also been associated with allergic symptoms and asthma.

o Naphthalene: This chemical is derived from coal tar, exposure to naphthalene has been linked to the destruction of red blood cells, nausea, blood in the urine and jaundice.

Air fresheners combined with other aerosol and household cleaning products contribute to a complex mixture of chemicals, which can cause a build-up of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) within the home.

These chemicals don’t just disappear into thin air. They linger on in your home as they land on your furniture and floors, sink into your carpeting, and settle on your skin. Even though you may be using them in small quantities, they can build up over time. Is it worth the risk to you and your family and pets?

There is a better way. You can freshen the air in your home with items right from your kitchen cupboards.

o White vinegar removes odors on surfaces and in the air, and it is a great cleaning product. Check out more uses of vinegar in your home. http://www.organic-eden.com/WondersOfVinegar.html/

o Create your own spray air freshener by mixing essential oils in water. Both lemon and cedar work great to deodorize. Place a few drops in a spray bottle with pure water and mist the air.

o Place open baking soda boxes in the kitchen and near the cat litter box.

o Add cinnamon, cloves, bay leaves, or lemon rinds (or any combination you like) to a pot of water on the stove and heat enough to produce a light steam. This works great in the winter because it softens your skin, helps to keep your wood furniture from drying out, and makes the house smell lovely. Check it often to make sure it doesn’t simmer dry. You can add more water periodically as needed.

o Burn essential oils in an aromatherapy diffuser.

Research has found that the air inside most homes and offices is at least twice as polluted as the outside air, so don’t forget to just open the windows and let that fresh air in.

I have co-founded a website that is dedicated to those who wish to live a more natural and organic life. Together with my sister Kathy, we have created Organic Eden. Our site has lots and lots of information about planting and growing your own organic garden, and about creating a more natural and eco-friendly home. We’ve done the research for you, and our website provides links to many natural and safe products for your garden, home and family. We are both Grandmas who want to help create a safer and healthier world to pass on to our precious grandchildren.

We’d love to have you visit us at http://www.organic-eden.com today.

Perfume and Cologne Categories and Families – Categories of Perfume

Perfume and cologne is on the rise and finding itself to be increasingly used more and more by today’s consumers. While on the one hand, bad smells are counteracted by fragrances including perfumes and colognes, people including marketing experts are now trying to introduce this sense into multimedia-based experiences. Wouldn’t that be cool to smell your favorite perfume or cologne through your computer? The aim is to make the fragrance a unique feature for a certain brand or location. Fragrances including perfume, cologne, air fresheners, laundry detergent, candles, etc. help make this world smell a little better. You need to be aware of what fragrances you are interested in as well as the different family’s and categories are that are contained in the perfumes and colognes you like and prefer.
